Homemade Liniment

My grandmother always applied this to her sore knees. She claimed it was better than anything else on the market. Anyone with sports’ injuries or arthritic pain will find this liniment soothing. All you need is 1 cup of white  vinegar and 1/2 tsp. of wintergreen oil. Mix it together and add to a bottle. Rub it over your sore area.

Carrot Nut Bread

I was trying to come up with a dessert bread for a work party and this is what I made. It’s a quick bread and quite delicious. You will need these ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1.5 cups flour
  • 1.5 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1.5 cups grated carrots
  • 1/2 cup golden raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease one 5×9 inch bread pan or two smaller loaf pans. Blend together eggs, sugars, vanilla, and vegetable oil. Add flour, salt, baking soda, and spices. Stir well. Add nuts, raisins and carrots. Mix well. Scoop batter into prepared pans. For large bread pan cook for 1 hour until done. If you are using the smaller pans, it cooks faster at 40 minutes. Allow to cool before cutting bread.

Mint Sauce

Do you have an herb garden overrun with mint? Here is a tasty recipe that uses mint. It can  be poured over ice cream, fresh fruit, or  in a drink. all you need are 3 ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup mint leaves

Wash the mint leaves before using. In a saucepan, combine all ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook until thickened, approximately 5 minutes. Strain. Makes about 2/3 cup.

Homemade Herbal AfterShave

Here is a simple recipe for a man. You will need these ingredients:

  • glass bottle
  • 1 cup vodka
  • 2 tsp. glycerin
  • 1/2 tsp. lemon essential oil
  • 10 drops clove essential oil
  • 1/2 tsp. rosemary essential oil
  • 1/2 tsp. lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops tincture of benzoin

Combine all ingredients into the glass bottle. Shake before applying. Keep away from heat.

Scented Ink

If you’re a bit of a romantic or would like to spice up your love life, why not write a poem or a love letter with scented ink? It’s an easy recipe. Here’s what you need:

  • 2 ounces ink
  • 1 teaspoon of vodka
  • a cartridge pen or a small paint brush
  • a glass jar with a lid
  • 80 drops of essential oil
  • paper

In your  jar, combine the vodka and the essential oil. Slowly add the ink. Shake well. With your cartridge pen draw up the concoction or if using a brush dip it in the concoction and flourish your paper with your love note. Add a few scrolls or designs. Allow to dry.
